Bones of Painted Letters

It’s a fascinating must-have book!  Gerard Richardson, scenic artist.

Preface

Signwriting is an art, a trade and a craft going back 2000 years. Having returned from the brink of extinction in the 80s, NGS today lead the young designers and artists across UK and the wider world, who are fast taking up the brush and re-kindling this fine artistic trade in ways the inspire the older generation of signmasters. Old-school meets new-school is the mission of this book.

Plainly speaking, painting letters is a beautiful thing to do.

This manual intends to show the DNA of all the keystone principles of the craft, showing precise sharp lettering techniques that have never previously illustrated in such detail. It features micro knowledge of brushstrokes, vintage letter shapes and pure letter design.

Backed up with a historical perspective and cornerstone modern day project application.

Thanks to…

To the renowned sign-masters, Noel Weber, Tobias Newbigin, Chris Dobell and David Smith who contribute to the pages lighting the way for the next generation of the craft.

The first of 4 Books full of the Bones of Letters from the London Signsmiths’ lettering school of NGS.

The first book by NGS provides an honest insight into the passion that has driven Nick Garrett to produce this publication. From the opening pages we begin to learn how this book has come to be, through hard work, dedication to an age old craft and many countless hours of commitment to his students, typography and letter forms alike. There are tips on tools of the trade, the signwriting history and its influences and origins, letter strokes, palleting the brush and explanations of different types and letters. This book contains various high quality illustrations and photographs throughout, which aid the reader with a better understanding of each explanation of the copy. This would undoubtedly be an exceptional accompaniment for the beginner-to-intermediate signwriter and mirrors a lot of what would no doubt be taught in one of the NGS signwriting workshops.

This an excellent book for both beginners and more advanced writers. Step by step instruction backed up with some solid history on the origins of the fonts involved. If you are interested in fonts, typography or graphic design or just love art and want to create then this is the book for you!

For the master of the craft to the inspired beginner and simply the curious mind alike – this concise tomb of information is a gem!
In this book – the first of four – Nick focuses on painted, sans-serif letters from London, NYC and Milan and he manages to convey such a weath of information, history, technique and passion in these pages that I would suggest this an essential edition to any creative or budding letterers library.
His dedication to the brush and the letter is tangible in every page and the wisdom he has amassed over many years honing the craft is delivered in this – a clear and engaging ‘signwriting manual’.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Where do I start? Well, I am highly impressed with this book. I found it educational as well as interesting.
Nick has taken the time to go into the history as well as the Technics of how to correctly paint the letters.
I must also say that I attended a two-day weekend course at Nick’s studio which again was excellent for anyone considering doing sign work of all genre. Thanks Nick

Painted letters should be clear so their message can easily be read. This book gives instruction so clearly it’s the next best to being in the studio with Nick as he infects you with his passion for the craft. History, technique and examples that will drive you to pick up your brushes.
