5 days of trusty, quality tuition and practice

From the first moments of the course you will know you are in the right place to learn this craft. I focus everything I do to make those first moments set up and remain unforgettable, in the right way.

5 days covering all the essentials of classic sans serifs, Romans and cursives.  Close up on sharp corners, painting clean letter shapes, vintage layouts, spacing solutions – with demos and hours of one to one personal training.

Video - detail of the brush technique I will teach.

The advantage of learning with NGS

Look Learn Play – we share all the old hand skills here and a brand NEW Diploma

Watching the mentor writer at work close up, automatically transfers to the student, the priceless knowledge loading his brush – it happens seamlessly amidst the process of observation and absorption. It’s quite magical how we can learn so much purely from observation.

We also learn well when our engagement with the subject is shifted from macro/micro perspectives, increasing retention dynamics: polarised learning with focused detail, including edge finishing and the bigger picture reference point, such as contextualisation, forming trend and branding – this kinetic or organic learning method helps stretch the student’s capacity and make room for stronger conceptual grasp: all under one NGS roof.

This course is now structured to a new Diploma Foundation Level 04 study, rolling out in February 2017.  It means you can gain real qualifications on the back of assessments and solid practice with a course designed by NGS.

Learn correctly is to learn vocationally.

Getting you into the Zone – trusting the brush

It’s really difficult keeping out of the zone TBH! The brush often leads you there itself… organic, with the backdrop of words and cues from the teacher. It’s often the fine tip of the quill that translates ideas into marks, giving you new clues as to untried methods, pure surprises and confidence building discoveries. It also serves up happy accidents… everything counts for the new writer.

By becoming at one with the brush you open up new ways of advancing. The tools are alive and reading your mind, before you do.

Above: the art team of Scriberia good through the paces with Nick developing some new versions of classics for fast paced presentation delivery.

Couple this new zone of creativity with a rigorous structured learning set up and a lot of laughs and you have the perfect environment… just add 5 days.

Kind words Dave Smith
I was taught by old timers , they instilled the basics up to the top level of work. 3 signwriters that had been writing in and around London since 1946, one went into screen printing and the other two into sign writing and pictorial work. I got lucky at 16 in 1984 thanks to my dad. You have the passion that the old timers had, I can see it in you.
And skill.
Dave Smith at work

The right building blocks & perfecting shapes from the beginning… and yes you can be a signwriter sooner than you think.

Course structure follows
This workshop sharpens skills and gains you that stable brush excellence you are after.  Excellence is organic, but it hinges on getting the proper sequence of essential techniques nailed, in the right order. It also builds from gaining a decent historical knowledge of lettering.
Many artists have creative excellence but without the right components of confidence and basics.
With a weak foundation the young writer’s professional pathway continually feels uncertain – as a result the work seems patchy – bad habits start to form and confidence dips.
With the right sequence of techniques learnt the shapes improve and accuracy comes.
We have a saying… take care of the stock of the brush and the tip will do fine by itself.
”Certainty and stable mechanics build strong signpainters – and confidence grows around real successes built in the practice studio”
That’s what this course delivers – a firm foundation: the key to accessing and fulfilling your unique skills.

Start the journey

All the master strokes

This course is unlike any other, as it gives you real ‘on-site’ skills, that you need to make it happen: Vocational, the business end of the art of signwriting.

It’s doesn’t say you’ll learn it all in 5 days but it never says you won’t be able to nail the skills in order to do so.

It does promise that you will have the essentials to build yourself a lettering practice by day 2 and on from there.

The course does take that risk and stands and lives by it.

Trust the brush! Take it – it’s yours!

Taking care of Student needs

Looking after my students is a lifetime’s joy. Sometimes I don’t see them for months or years, but all of them stay in my mind and take a great chunk of learning from the days in the studio.

It’s hard work! I push them all at some point, to break through, get brave, take it on.

It’s know when to and when to take them aside and reassure them that they will get the next hill behind them.

Ngs shared learning

A thousand words – I read these images like pages. The guys on the left fully immersed… Each student is special.
